Lucore says the durable, durable Skipjack — called for his brown-eyed wife, Della — is more than effective at long-range cruising, with some changes. Two important steps were repowering and incorporating gas capability.

“According to FUBAR guidelines, you should be able to cruise 450 kilometers at 8.5 knots between gasoline stops, ” Lucore describes. “So we enhanced the capacity regarding the primary gas container from 140 gallons to 175 gallons and included an additional 50-gallon container forward. And I also changed the twin diesels with a [single] 270 hp Cummins MerCruiser Duoprop. That offered us our range the first FUBAR in 2007.”

It was the third repower for Brown-Eyed woman. Initially, Lucore repowered with double gas engines, after that with double Volvo Penta diesels. In 2005, he moved for the single diesel motor. Search observes that the single motor had two noteworthy advantages.

Tight Quarters, (Mainly) Smooth Ride
After an extended await gasoline at Ensenada’s El Coral Marina, Brown-Eyed Girl departed on the first over night passageway on Nov. 9. Crew users held view with two hours on and four-hours off per guy. Their log notes, “Bright moon, smooth water, no wind.”

One-man slept into the queen berth, another inside V-berth. The next, Bruntsch, slept on deck.

Brown-Eyed Girl’s accommodations are Spartan, with a tiny refrigerator and a camp stove inside galley and a marine mind. The bath, Lucore commentary with a grin, is on the swim action.

As with every overseas cruise, there have been a couple of glitches. If they attained Cedros Island, the crew noticed that their particular oil pan ended up being dripping across the gasket (the pan had been recently replaced). They tightened most of the bolts, thankful when it comes to service area given by a single engine — and discovered that the main bilge pump wasn’t working. Nor was the 700-watt inverter, and so the freezer worked only when they ran the generator.

Climate blew in overnight, rocking the anchorage with rainfall and wind. The crew cleaned the watercraft, consumed chili and enjoyed a beer or two on Nov. 12. One of many neighborhood panga fishermen recommended all of them which they had been in for a larger blow, so they protected the anchor.

The wood notes that the next evening had been rough: “40-knot wind, a few inches of rain and strong cross swell. Gary got damp, and not much sleep.”

Despite running over a lobster pot at Turtle Bay and using time to disentangle the prop, their post-storm departure became on an idyllic cruising time. The eight-foot seas, after from the starboard quarter, performedn’t place a damper on the fishing; the team caught several bonito and a small California yellowtail after which cruised into calm Ascension Bay at sunset.

Brown-Eyed woman had several peaceful times, getting dorado (mahimahi) for garlic-butter seafood sandwiches and investing a serene morning at a prime fishing area they call “the 23 spot.”

In calm seas, the crew took an hour and a half to move gasoline from additional tank into the main container, after which they cruised to man-of-war Cove at Puerto Magdalena to blow the evening. When they departed the following early morning at 8, they fixed the inverter. As the sign observed: “The fridge today works on the inverter. (But) the Honda generator doesn’t run now.” Luckily, Bruntsch was able to fix that too.

Even more happily, they made their repair works ahead of nightfall.

Deep, Stormy Night
Piloting at night, because the seas banged up, put the three old salts to the test. It absolutely was, Lucore states, a challenging night. The sign files 20-plus-knot winds with a heaving west-northwest swell.

“Those were the worst conditions I’ve had, ” Lucore remarks. “We had six- to seven-foot seas and couldn’t depend on the autopilot, therefore we needed to hand-steer forever.
